Kids & Teens Program:
Building Future Leaders
The Gracie Barra Kids & Teens Program is designed to build the next generation of leaders by instilling our core values of Brotherhood, Integrity, and Development through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Ranging from 3-15 years of age, our 16 Week Curriculum is designed to teach the complete art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu curated to specific age groups, to better help students succeed and foster an optimal learning environment.
The goal for all of our programs is to strengthen behavior and listening skills, boost focus during group activities, improve physical coordination and strength, develop self confidence and communication skills, and establish positive routines.
Tiny Champions: 3-4 Years Old
For our youngest age group, this 30 minute class is centered around self-defense, takedowns, and the foundations of ground positions. We do not teach kids submissions at this age, instead we utilize games and exercises to help with coordination and apply what they are learning in class.
Juniors: 10-15 Years Old
In our oldest age group, this 50 minute class introduces the idea of sparring, to help them apply techniques being taught to them in class. Our curriculum and class structure allows students to understand the entire art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, focusing on self-defense, takedowns, and ground fighting.
Little Champions 1: 5-6 Years Old
This 50 minute class is centered around self-defense, takedowns, and the foundations of ground positions. We do not have kids at this age do submissions due to their stage of development. However, in this program we introduce Jiu-Jitsu based games that reinforce positions and techniques taught in class.
GBK: Advanced Kids
Once LC2 or Junior students receive their Grey/White Belt they can move up to the Advanced Kids class. This 50 minute class is designed for students who want to expand their knowledge of Jiu-Jitsu while having familiarity with the techniques taught in either LC2 or Juniors classes. In this class, we introduce more advanced techniques, specific training, and sparring to allow students to feel more comfortable playing the entire game of Jiu-Jitsu.
Little Champions 2: 7-9 Years Old
This 50 minute class teaches the complete art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This program introduces the application of submissions and how to apply them in a safe and controlled manner. We also introduce students to specific training to help them apply techniques being taught to them in class from certain positions.
GBK: Competition Team
This 90 minute, high intensity class is designed is to get students ready for competition. This is an exclusive invite-only class designed for like-minded students, who enjoy training Jiu-Jitsu and want to take their skills to the next level. Competition is the vehicle we will use to build and improve students’ skills, self confidence and discipline, creating a tight-knit Jiu Jitsu Team.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my child doesn’t want to step on the mats?
For many families, students may need several attempts to step onto the mats or complete the class. Our certified instructors are available to support them throughout this process.
Can my child do a program that is above or below their age group?
Our curriculums are adapted to specific age groups according to their current stage of development. To create a positive learning environment and get the most out of their Jiu-Jitsu journey, we always recommend for children to stay in their age groups.
Is there a uniform policy?
Yes. For every class students must wear the official Gracie Barra Gi, Gracie Barra Rashguard, and their current belt. If the class is NoGi, students must wear the Gracie Barra Ranked Rashguard (the color of their current belt), Gracie Barra NoGi Shorts or Gracie Barra Gi Pants. If they choose to wear leggings, they can be Gracie Barra leggings or must be all black.
When can my child move up to the next age group?
Once your child ages out of the program, please let an instructor know and they will guide you through the process of moving them up to the next age group.
How do stripes and belt promotions work?
Every new student begins as a white belt and can earn stripes based on attendance, behavior, effort, and skill development. Typically, students can expect to earn one stripe each month if they consistently attend at least twice a week.
Does my child have to compete?
We never force students to compete and it’s never a requirement. If a student expresses the desire to compete we will always encourage them. We usually refer them to our Gracie Barra CompNet, which is a great family friendly event for both beginner and veteran competitors.
Am I allowed to film during class?
Parents are welcome to capture short videos or take photos of their child during drills, exercises, games, and promotions; however, recording is not permitted during sparring sessions.
